Puerto Rican Food
Food. It’s essential, anyway you want to put it, we can’t live without it and I’m glad it’s like that. I’m from an island in the Caribbean named Puerto Rico and aside from all the beautiful sites, history and all; I could tell you, that when you mention Puerto Rico, food will be one of the first things to come to mind. Food is what gives the daily routine it’s seasoning, it wouldn’t be the same to go out to the mountains and not be able to stop by a local shop and eat some typical food such as: “Lechon” (pig), “tostones” (fried plantain), “amarillos” (sweet plantains), “arroz con gandules” (rice with pigeon peas), among other dishes. Families come to celebrate around the food, friends catch up over food or just hitting the road on the weekend for a good old fashion road trip and stopping by local shops that provoke your senses with the invigorating smell of some typical fried food. It’s not just the salivation that is induced by the food, but it’s the moments it creates with others, the comfort and the warmth of having something familiar to relax to after a stressful day. Food for me is a new impression, a greeting of sorts when embarking on a journey. In this case, my travel overseas will take me to meet face to face with this higher institution of learning called Emory College.
